Matt was born in Wardle, Rochdale in 1989. Attending Wardle High School with its rich brass band tradition, it was expected that he played an instrument. He started on Tuba and won a plethora of titles whilst at school tutored by Lee Rigg, including the National Youth Championships of Great Britain. Whilst at school he also played at Rochdale Music Service and in the Youth band under Eric Landon, he experienced success every year. Six Action Research Youth Entertainment Championships, multiple Whit Friday titles and Music for Youth titles. Featuring at the Royal Albert Hall twice.
Whilst at school, Matt auditioned for the National Children’s Bras Band of Great Britain and was successful in becoming Principal Eb Bass in his first two courses. Some years later went on to represent the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.
As a tuba player, Matt attended the Royal Northern College of Music enjoying a fabulous 4 years, where his love of brass bands saw him play at Milnrow, Rothwell and Fodens. He was tutored by Robin Haggart of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, whom he had been receiving lessons from since he was 16.
Matt stopped playing full time in brass bands in 2014 when he completed his PGCE and became Head of Music at Manchester Creative and Media Academy. Having taught here and later at Tottington High School, he now teaches back in his home town of Rochdale at Oulder Hill High School as Head of Music.
To ‘keep his lip in’ Matt decided to start an Oompah Band, and with a few friends from the local area formed the Jager Maestros Oompah Band. The band continues to grow from strength to strength, however his oompah days are behind him.
In May 2016 Matt accepted the position of Musical Director of Dobcross Youth Band, helping the band improve considerably. The band qualified for the Music for Youth finals twice, the first in the bands history and gained prizes at Whit Friday and the Holme Valley contest, up against tough competition. In February 2019 he led the band to a fantastic 5th place at the North West Areas (4th Section). Matt personally organised many trips for the band, the highlight being a week in France and Belgium culminating in a fabulous and poignant performance at the Menin Gate, Ypres. The band also raised a fantastic amount of money when they played for over 24 hours straight, an amazing feat given the bands average age of 13.
In April 2019 Matt accepted the position of Musical Director of Sale Brass band who had just won the North West 4th Section areas. The first contest together saw Matt lead the band to a very respectable 6th place.
Matt was appointed to the Musical Director position with Slaithwaite Band in September 2019 and is looking forward to the challenges ahead and producing many fantastic performances on the contest and concert stage.
